Amazon Opens ChatGPT Ads to Its Advertisers — While OpenAI Shuts Rivals Out

Two stories landed on 10 September that only make sense read together.
Amazon announced a partnership with OpenAI letting its advertisers run ads inside ChatGPT, starting with a select group of US brands. Separately, OpenAI was reported to have told advertising partners it will no longer approve campaigns for standalone image and voice generation products — cutting rival AI tools out of the very inventory Amazon is now selling into.
The same surface is opening up and closing down, depending on who you are.
What Amazon actually shipped
Conversational ad inventory inside ChatGPT is available as a managed service through Amazon DSP, with OpenAI handling placement through its own systems. US only at launch. Delta Vacations is among the pilot brands.
Advertisers can buy on either cost-per-click or CPM. Amazon is also offering product feed ads that generate ad assets automatically from an advertiser's product catalogue — which is the detail most likely to matter for anyone doing ecommerce, because it means your existing feed is the input.
For context on why Amazon bothered: OpenAI's ad business reportedly hit a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate on 31 August 2026, under 200 days after launch.
What OpenAI closed
Adobe — an early participant in OpenAI's advertising trial — reportedly lost the ability to promote Firefly, its AI image generation tool, on the platform. The restriction is said to cover standalone image and voice generation products. Video generation tools can reportedly still advertise.
The timing lines up with OpenAI expanding its own image and voice capabilities inside ChatGPT.
Platforms blocking direct competitors from advertising is not new or especially shocking — Google and Meta both do versions of it. What's notable is how early it's happening here. This ad business is months old and already making structural decisions about who is allowed to buy attention on it.
Why this matters if you don't buy ads
Feed quality is now the shared input across three surfaces. Google's AI Mode selects products partly on feed richness. Merchant Center's AI reporting flags missing attributes. And Amazon's ChatGPT product feed ads build creative from your catalogue. The same underlying asset — complete, accurate, well-described product data — is what feeds all of it. That's a rare case of one piece of work paying out three ways.
Conversational surfaces are becoming pay-to-play faster than search did. Google took years to go from organic-dominant to ads-dominant above the fold. ChatGPT went from no ad product to a billion-dollar run rate in under 200 days. If you are planning organic AI visibility on the assumption that these surfaces stay mostly unmonetised, that assumption has a short shelf life.
Category-level exclusion is now a real risk. The Adobe situation is a reminder that on a platform which also builds products, your ability to advertise depends on whether you compete with the host. If you operate anywhere near an AI platform's own product roadmap, paid distribution on that platform is not something you can safely build a plan around.
Attribution is about to get harder again. Ads inside a conversational interface, bought through a third-party DSP, placed by the platform's own systems. Work out now how that traffic will be identified and where it lands in your reporting, because the default is that it arrives looking like something else.
What to actually do
Nothing urgent, unless you're a US brand on Amazon DSP with a mature product feed — in which case this is worth a small test, precisely because it's early and priced accordingly.
For everyone else the useful response is the boring one: get the product data right. It is the input to Google's AI selection, to Merchant Center's diagnostics, and now to automated creative on a third platform. That work does not depend on which of these surfaces turns out to matter.
