Google's Agentic Commerce Push: UCP Checkout, AI Share of Voice and a Business Agent Inside YouTube Ads

Google published a set of commerce updates on 16 September 2026, framed around the holiday shopping season. Underneath the seasonal packaging is something more structural: Google is building the plumbing for AI agents to buy things, and asking retailers to supply the data that makes it work.
Four things shipped or moved.
AI performance insights are now generally available
Merchant Center's AI performance insights have moved to general availability in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States.
The feature reports your share of voice against other brands across Google surfaces including AI Mode and AI Overviews. That is the part worth pausing on. Retailers have spent two years asking how visible they are inside AI-generated shopping answers, and the honest answer has been that nobody could tell them. This is Google's answer — for merchants, in Merchant Center, rather than for publishers in Search Console.
It is a comparative metric, not an absolute one. Share of voice tells you how you stack up; it does not tell you how many people saw anything.
UCP-powered checkout gets cart transfers and flow testing
The Universal Commerce Protocol integration hub in Merchant Center is Google's standardised way for AI agents and commerce platforms to carry out shopping transactions. Merchants using the hub for UCP-powered checkout can now enable:
- Cart transfers back to their own websites
- Enhanced checkout-flow testing
Google says analytics and further capabilities are coming, without committing to a date.
Rollout is gradual, in the US first, with Australia and Canada expected early next year.
The reference customer is Tapestry — owner of Coach and Kate Spade — which used UCP-powered checkout to make products purchasable across Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app ahead of the holiday season.
Cart transfer is the detail that matters most here. It means the agentic path does not have to end in a Google-hosted transaction; the agent can assemble a cart and hand it back to you. For any retailer that has resisted agentic commerce because it looked like disintermediation, that is a materially different proposition to consider.
Business Agent moves into YouTube ads
Google is inviting eligible US retailers into a beta that embeds its Business Agent directly inside YouTube ads. A viewer can ask detailed product questions — features, fit, specifics — and get tailored answers without leaving YouTube.
Business Agent already existed in Search as conversational shopping assistance. Putting it inside a video ad collapses the gap between seeing a product and interrogating it, which has always been the weak joint in video advertising.
The unglamorous part: your product feed
Google's own emphasis, buried under the agent announcements, is that feed quality is now the input that everything else depends on. Two figures were offered, both Google's own numbers from its own testing, so treat them as directional rather than independently verified:
- Merchants adopting Google's core Merchant Center feed best practices see an average 5% increase in conversions the following month.
- In testing with Lululemon, conversational attributes supplied by the retailer were incorporated into relevant AI Mode product recommendations 50% of the time.
That second number is the more interesting one. Conversational attributes are the descriptive fields that answer how a product actually behaves — the things a shopper asks about rather than filters on. If half of relevant AI Mode recommendations drew on retailer-supplied attributes, then the feed is not just an eligibility document any more. It is source material for the answer.
Retailers can also connect loyalty-program data to Merchant Center so Google surfaces member-specific pricing and benefits — Google's example being Minted's "Minted More" members seeing their pricing on holiday cards. This sits alongside the loyalty-program member targeting that arrived in Google Ads recently.
What this actually changes
Feed work is now answer-layer work. We covered conversational attributes and search intent terms arriving in Merchant Center AI performance reporting a couple of days ago, along with the 500px minimum image requirement and product videos in organic listings. Read together, those are not four separate feed housekeeping tasks. They are Google steadily raising the quality floor on the data it uses to generate shopping answers.
The purchase is moving inside the answer. UCP exists so that an agent can complete a transaction. Once checkout happens in AI Mode or the Gemini app, the session that used to end on your site ends somewhere else — unless you have enabled cart transfer, which is precisely why that feature matters more than its low-key announcement suggests.
Measurement is still one step behind capability. This is the same gap John Mueller conceded on the publisher side: Google is shipping capability into AI surfaces faster than it ships any way to see what that capability does. Share of voice in Merchant Center is a real improvement over nothing, but "analytics coming soon" on UCP checkout means the agentic path is live before the reporting on it is.
What to do
Audit your feed against Google's core best practices before the season, not during it. If Google's 5% figure is even roughly right, this is the highest-certainty work on the list and it has a one-month lag before it shows up.
Write conversational attributes deliberately. Fit, material behaviour, use case, care, compatibility — the questions a shopper would ask a salesperson. On the Lululemon evidence, these are what get pulled into recommendations.
Check whether AI performance insights are live in your Merchant Center account if you sell in AU, CA, IN, NZ or the US. It is GA, so it should be there.
Decide your position on UCP before a competitor decides it for you. Cart transfer means participating in agentic checkout no longer has to mean surrendering the customer relationship. That changes the calculation that most retailers made when UCP first appeared.
Connect loyalty data if you run a programme. Member pricing surfacing at the point of discovery is a straightforward advantage, and few retailers will have done it yet.
