Google Tests Paginated Follow-Up Responses in AI Mode, With a Skip Button

Google is testing a new response format inside AI Mode: after you get an answer, AI Mode automatically generates a follow-up question within the same chat and shows a second, paginated response — with a skip button if you'd rather not see it.

What was spotted

The test was first spotted by Sachin Patel on X, who shared side-by-side screenshots of the behaviour on both mobile and desktop. Patel described it directly: "After submitting an answer, AI Mode generated a new query within the same chat based on the response."

In practice, that means AI Mode isn't just answering what you typed — it's pre-empting your next question, generating and paginating a follow-up response automatically, and letting you dismiss it if it's not useful.

What this means

This fits the direction Google has been pushing AI Mode in for a while: keeping the conversation inside AI Mode rather than sending users back out to a fresh search or an external site. An auto-generated follow-up, paginated and skippable, is a low-friction way to extend a session without forcing the user to type anything else.

It's also a step further than a change Google confirmed officially in January 2026, when it began letting users tap a follow-up question directly from an AI Overview and jump straight into an AI Mode conversation, carrying the original query's context with them. Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for Search, framed the rationale at the time: "For complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic deeply, you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience." Google said its testing showed users preferred a flow that moved naturally into conversation rather than starting over with a fresh query, and made that jump-to-AI-Mode feature available globally alongside switching AI Overviews to run on Gemini 3 by default.

That January change required the user to tap a suggested follow-up themselves. What's being tested now goes a step further: AI Mode generating and displaying a follow-up response automatically, without a tap, and needing an explicit skip to avoid it. It's the same underlying goal — keep the session going — but with less user initiation required to trigger it.

Why it matters for site owners

Every one of these changes pulls more of the search session inside Google's own interface. A follow-up that's auto-generated and pre-loaded, rather than one the user has to actively request, means fewer moments where a user might otherwise leave AI Mode and land on an external result. If you're tracking referral traffic from AI Mode sessions via GSC or analytics, this is the kind of change that shows up as a shift in when in a session a click happens — later, deeper into a multi-turn conversation — rather than a change in total volume.

It's a test, not a confirmed rollout, and Google hasn't commented on the auto-generated version specifically. Worth watching whether it expands, and whether these auto-generated follow-up queries start showing up in AI Mode's own citation or "sources" data if you're tracking that referral path.
